“The day I married my best friend”
At the first weekend in February, we had the honour to capture the intimate wedding of Belinda & Manuel in Newrybar Downs, Byron Bay. We flew with Simone, our videographer, from Melbourne one day before the wedding to Gold Coast airport and drove down to Byron Bay. From our first impression, the life is ticking a bit slower here, there is no rush and everyday seems to be the same. We met there with the couple at their luxurious villa, which they did rent for the time being in Byron Bay and to celebrate their ceremony here. We familiarised ourselves with the venue, so that we could maximise the time on the following day to avoid searching for spots to take photos as well as to understand the light setting for the ceremony. Since the ceremony was in the afternoon, we would have very bright sunlight, which would result in harsh contrast for shadow and light, especially in the faces. We were lucky that the venue was surrounded by a beautiful rainforest and big palm trees, providing us with the much needed shadow for the ceremony.
On the following day, we started our photo and video coverage with the bride’s preparation in Suffolk Park at another beautiful villa, nestled in the rainforest surroundings. The bride getting quite nervous as closer we came to the ceremony, Kate stayed with her, while Marco and Simone continued to Newrybar Downs, to capture the preparation of the groom. The groom being Italian and having his parents over from Italy, it was easier for the boys to communicate in Italian, helping the parents to understand more of the happenings. It’s a great advantage for us, being able to to cover other languages than English – Italian & German. With the multicultural mix we have in Australia, English is not always the mother language.
The bride and her bridesmaids got picked up with the beautiful VW Kombi “Frankie”, provided by Kombi Celebrations. Just after getting everyone got seated, the button from Belinda’s dress popped off, holding it together behind the neck. Not so good. Luckily the driver had a little sewing kit and the bride’s mum fixed the button quickly, as it started to get quite hot in the old Kombi Van. Once we were ready to go, we stopped on the way to the ceremony in Old Newrybar Town to take a couple of photos with the girls, before it was time to arrive at the venue for the ceremony. We couldn’t follow the tradition, that the bride arrives late, since we didn’t have much time before the reception started to take portrait photos. As the ceremony was held along the driveway of the villa, the bride had to hide behind the supplied handheld fan. Belinda & Manuel invited only very close family members and friends, coming from all over Australia and Italy to Byron Bay. We enjoyed an emotional celebration of their union after many many years of companionship.
Following this, their guests had canapés and drinks at the cabana next to the pool, while we started taking portrait photos with the newlyweds on the huge lawn in front of the villa. Both needed a drink to warm up and relax, but once we got started we got quickly through it. after the lawn, we took of with the bridal party and the Kombi Van, stopped shortly nearby at a small Macadamia Plantation, to use the trees for some photos and continued then a little trip to a road near Bangalow, to use a quite road with old trees for photos with “Frankie” the Kombi Van.
The evening was completed with a reception at the Harvest Cafe in Newrybar in Cocktail-Style. For the beginning we had a local band, but later in the night, when the finished off, Manuel was giving a great DJ performance, doing this as a hobby at home. As a surprise for Belinda, he organised an invitation of a past X-Factor candidate, Tommy Franklin, who came up with a crazy dance performance, clearly enjoying the late night dancing. The bride was indeed very surprised and everyone enjoyed watching and dancing with Tommy.
Thanks Belinda & Manuel, for choosing us – we had a great time! We wish you all the best and hope that many years of friendship like yours will follow. We had a great time in Byron Bay and can only say, the beaches are great, the water is warm, very constant weather conditions and beautiful surroundings for weddings. Thanks for selecting this place for your beautiful place to celebrate your love!
